The Alameda Health System’s Refugee Health Program is designed to ease the anxieties and address the needs of staying healthy in a new environment. We provide medical and dental care for adults and children. Our staff/interpreter will help with information, appointments and referrals.
Among the important services available are:
- Initial health screening – The federal government pays for this screening at your first appointment. Our staff will talk with you about your medical history, your current condition and take some baseline readings – blood pressure, vision, hearing, heartbeat. Blood, urine and stool samples will be taken, as will a tuberculin skin test.
- Immunization/vaccination – These important health tools are needed before children can enroll in school and before a residence ‘green card’ can be issued. They can be expensive so it is best to do it early while you have Medi-Cal coverage.
- Important tests – Mammograms, pelvic exams and Pap smear tests are available for women. Testicular and prostate exams are available for men.
Our skilled staff has experience working with refugees, asylum cases and trafficking victims. Interpreters are available to explain the process in a language you can understand – 24 different languages in all. The staff will work with you to arrange appointments and referrals to the services you need. They can explain the range of insurance coverages available.
